Former Newton Design Intern’s Wind Turbine Project
Former Newton Design intern (and soon to be full time mechanical designer) Daniel Lauer did this project as part of his school work last semester. Newton Design is a big advocate for STEM academic disciplines, and wants to congratulate Daniel on his hard work. We look forward to having him back as a full time employee. Here’s part of the abstract from Daniel’s report:
“The purpose of this project is to design and build a wind turbine system that utilizes unique whale-fin technology to optimize aerodynamic performance of the blades and increase overall turbine performance. To do this, an iterative method of design and testing was performed to determine the contour and overall shape of the final blade design. Ultimately, it was discovered that adding sinusoidal projections, or tubercles, to the leading edge of the blade results in better performance when compared to a normal blade without tubercles.”
