Newton Design has developed a variety of law enforcement training simulators used by the U.S. Federal Air Marshal Service (FAMS), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). These simulators faithfully reproduce aircraft cabin and cockpit environments, and are similar in exterior appearance to aircraft cabin service trainers used by commercial airlines. However, the training that takes place inside them is very different.
Force-on-force training and close-quarters combat within an aircraft cabin are critical skill sets for those who are tasked with keeping our skies and our nation safe. Our Aircraft Cabin Training Simulators (ACTS) provide law enforcement agencies with a realistic, safe, and durable training environment. We have delivered twenty-two such simulators in recent years simulating general aircraft types (widebody, narrowbody, upper deck), the largest of which is a double-deck configuration simulating a widebody cabin on the lower deck, and the upper deck of a two-level aircraft above.
Passenger cabins feature business and economy seating classes, semi-functional lavatories and galleys, functional overhead bins, and Flight Attendant stations with functional PA handsets. Simulated smoke, chaotic/inoperative lighting, and realistic aircraft cabin sounds can be introduced via a touchpad at the Instructor Operating Station (IOS), which is located outside the simulator. A CCTV system including cameras with impact-resistant lenses and DVR for post-training analysis is also included. For added realism the IOS resembles an airport check-in counter.
As with other Newton Design simulators, modularity is part of the design of the ACTS. Our installation teams have delivered and installed ACTS in very challenging locations (basements with limited access, for example).
flight deck
Security of the aircraft flight deck is of paramount importance. Newton Design has delivered multiple cockpit/flight deck simulators designed to train judgement pistol shooting (JPS) and flight deck security. The simulated cockpits are robust, low-fidelity mockups of the flight deck, and include adjustable crew seats with restraints, control yokes, glareshields, main instrument panels, center consoles, and overhead panels. The simulators feature robust construction, and are designed to safely withstand the physical demands of flight deck security training.

To facilitate the dynamic and physical nature of force-on-force training, Newton Design’s Transportation Security simulators incorporate several unique design features:
They are extremely robust and made to withstand the rigors of law enforcement training, which would severely damage the interior of a standard aircraft cabin mock-up. Simulator components such as interior bulkheads and passenger seats are structurally enhanced, and components such as lavatory doors feature easy to reset break-away door track hardware.
The use of a durable coating on all interior components (all interior walls and bulkheads, including seats and seat backs) protects the interior from Non-Lethal Training Ammunition (NLTA) impacts as well as other abuse.
In the unlikely event a simulator component is damaged during training, it can be replaced quickly and inexpensively due to innovative design and material choices. Often this can be done by site maintenance personnel.
The simulators are constructed to prevent the escape of any NLTA or debris, providing safety for any personnel located outside the simulator while training is in progress.
